Last week, the attorney for George Zimmerman, the defendant in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, kicked off his opening arguments with a knock-knock joke.
Attorney Don West’s sense of levity in the midst of a high-profile murder trial didn’t sit too well with a lot of people. He had to promise he’d lay off the bad jokes.
He didn’t offer any promises about celebrating his performance with ice cream, however. West returned to apology mode over the weekend after a photo of him celebrating over soft-serve cones with two of his daughters went viral.
The caption on the photo, which West himself took just after his opening statements but one of his daughters posted to Instagram, reads, “We beat stupidity celebration cones #zimmerman #defense #dadkilledit.”
Shawn Vincent, a spokesman for the family, said the photo was “grossly insensitive.”
West offered this statement: “As a parent, we’re not always proud of things our children do, but we love them anyway, and then we move on.”
In the family’s defense, Vincent said West’s daughters frequently poke fun at their dad, and they often go out for ice cream.
The daughter who posted the picture, Molly West, has apparently deactivated her Instagram and Twitter accounts.
