The Hip-Hop lyrics website has secured a licensing deal with Sony/ATV.
In a notice from the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), the website, RapGenius.com, was requested to remove all Hip-Hop lyrics from its site, unless they obtain a license. RapGenius.com was amongst a number of sites to whom the message was sent.
Now, having made a deal with the world’s largest music publisher, RapGenius.com can look forward to reproducing many more rap lyrics on its website.
RapGenius.com founder, Tom Lehman, said that he was aiming for more deals, as he believes that more licensing deals will ensure that the site’s relationship with artists “will only grow stronger”.
Martin Bandier, Chairman & CEO of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, said of the website that it meant that fans and songwriters could build a relationship with one another in a “new and exciting way.”
Lehman has described the purpose of the site as a resource which can “add context to all important texts in people’s lives,” said Lehman.
RapGenius.com doesn’t simply deal in rap lyrics, boasting Rock, poetry and news sites too.
