KY Man

A Kentucky man is behind bars charged with murdering his wife.

He said it was her final wish that he kill her and put her out of her misery. Reporter Nikki Burdine spoke to him from jail.

He explained in his own words why he did it. “She told me to end the pain, stop the pain,” he said. From the Laurel County Jail Chumbley said through tears he killed his wife.

“Did I want to do it? For her I did,” he said. “No I don’t. I didn’t want to do it.”

It happened at their home on Green Lawn Subdivision around 2:30 a.m. in the morning.Deputies say Ernest shot his wife, Virginia, then called 911. His defense says it was a mercy killing. He says Virginia has been fighting cancer for several years now.

“I loved her. I love her, and she took it as far as she wanted to go,” Chumley said.

And although they were shocked, a neighbor had the same reaction when we told them the news.

“The only reason I could think he shot her is she probably asked him to cause she was hurting so bad,” said neighbor Stan Campbell.

Now, Ernest says, the only comfort he has, is that he granted her last wish.

“She ain’t in pain no more,” he said. “She’s a good woman. A good woman.”

Ernest Chumbley is facing murder charges.
