If you were in the crowd last night, or just had enough in you to stay awake until 2:30 a.m. eastern standard time, then you had the chance to see Outkast perform together after more than 8 years.
The duo came together to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last night. The two are hitting the road together this summer in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of their debut album, Southernplayalisticcaddiliacmusic.
The started off their set playing one of my favorite songs of all time “B.O.B” from the duo’s 2000 album Stankonia.
From there, they gave us performances of hits like “ATLiens” and “Skew It on the Bar-B,” (wished they brought out Raekwon but whatever). They also performed some lesser known tracks like, “Vibrate” and “Bowtie” from the last album they really worked together on, Idlewild.
The duo did bring out some friends to rock out. Janelle Monae sang her hit “Tightrope.” Future, who has Andre 3000 featured on his up-coming album, Honest, hit the stage in support of the Atlanta legends too.
They also brought out their Dungeon Family family, Sleepy Brown and Killer Mike (who was a victim of the set getting cut short) to join them on stage.
They performed some of their biggest hits at the end of the show. “Ms Jackson,” “The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya” brought the crowd to their feet before the set was cut short at 1:00 a.m. (4:00 a.m. ET), inciting boos from the crowd and apologies from Andre 3000.
The reunion received mixed early reviews from fans at the festival and watching live online. Most people complained that the groups set was not upbeat enough for a headliner.
They saved the best for last, but when you wait 8-years to see an iconic act like Outkast, you just expect a little bit more that a few mainstream hits and a couple of guests.
